100 percent incredible.
99 Percent Invisible
This fabulous podcast takes its name from a quote by Buckminster Fuller who said “Ninety-nine percent of who you are is invisible and untouchable”. That said, the name also echoes the fact that good design is 99% invisible. And since everything has a design (intentional or unintentional) everything has a hidden story behind its creation. This is the stuff of this podcast.
With more than 150 episodes released, I believe they have a limitless supply of great stories we have not not heard. Great stories are what make this podcast so good. Roman Mars, the creator, and his crew have a knack for building a great story around a single topic and delivering it beautifully into your earbuds. I have listened to every one.
For me, this podcast is like subscribing to a great magazine that brings you interesting stories about things you never knew you would be interested in learning about.
Where else would I have learned about the Secret Staircases that exist — in public — around cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and others? Or the back story of The Inflatable Men that grace the used car lots of America - and have developed into a very useful agricultural product. And over a hundred other interesting stories, both public and personal.
At first, the episodes were less than 10 minutes, but that gradually expanded to an average of around 20 minutes. To me, they always seem too short. But I can always fit an episode or two in while I am in the car, taking a walk or exercising. I have a few other podcasts I listen to as well, but this is always at the top of my list.
What sets 99 Percent Invisible apart is the diversity of topics told with outstanding production quality.
Give it try, pick an early episode and tell me this podcast is not incredible.
